Layers of fall bedding can also reveal layers of textile history

With fall comes coziness and there’s nothing quite like the start of the season to make you realize your bedroom needs a re-cozy, replacing too-light summer blankets, with fluff, warmth, and perhaps even a bit of textile history.

Larissa Runkle of Realtor.com scoured the internet to find five of the best fall-friendly bedding options on the market. From chunky knit blankets to warm-hued sheets and everything in between, she offers a bedroom roundup you’ll greet with open arms. But what goes around comes around. What’s old is new again, and each layer described here has its own unique provenance.

Embroidered bedding with throwback nostalgic designs has been a staple in bedroom decor for centuries. The art of embroidery can be traced back to ancient civilizations, with elaborate designs adorning royal bedchambers in Egypt, China, and medieval Europe. Today, it continues to be a popular choice for those seeking a touch of elegance in their bedrooms. "Embroidered bedding is a classic that never goes out of style," says designer Bob Berriz. "The intricate details give a luxe feel, while the weight provides extra coziness for cooler weather. Paired with fall-colored sheets, the combination is stylish yet cozy."

Warm fall tones like rust and terra cotta have gained popularity in recent years, drawing inspiration from the earthy palettes used in traditional Native American and Mediterranean textiles. These colors work especially well in bedding designs. "Rust-colored sheets and a faux fur throw create a perfect pairing for a fall-themed bedroom," says lead designer and architect Anna Tatsioni. "The earthy tones and natural textures evoke a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. This bedding would be a beautiful addition to a bohemian or farmhouse-style room."

Waffle-knit throws have their origins in 19th-century textile manufacturing, when mechanical looms made it possible to create complex weave patterns efficiently. These textured blankets have since become a favorite for layering in bedding designs. For added warmth, waffle-knit throws, with their woven texture, provide extra insulation and visual interest. In natural fibers like cotton or wool, waffle-knit throws are lightweight yet warm. Their neutral, textured look also pairs well with most decor styles.

Moody botanical prints have a rich history in textile design, dating back to the intricate tapestries of the Renaissance and the nature-inspired patterns of the Arts and Crafts movement. Today, they offer a unique alternative to typical fall bedding. Moody botanicals in deep, rich colors are perfect for fall bedding. Rich emerald greens, navy blues, and eggplant purples reflect the darker mood of the season. Focusing on foliage rather than flowers gives a more dramatic, seasonal look.

Linen, one of the oldest textiles known to humanity, has been used for bedding for thousands of years, prized for its durability and breathability. Ancient Egyptians believed it to be a symbol of purity and wealth. While often associated with summer, linen can be an excellent choice for fall bedding when layered properly. "I love working with clients who appreciate the timeless beauty of linen bedding," says Tatsioni. "It's a versatile choice that can fit seamlessly into various interior styles, from minimalist to bohemian. Opt for a rich, earthy-toned linen set and pair it with a chunky knit throw. It's a combination that never fails to impress."
