“The holiday season is a bit like running a marathon; but if you’re anything like us, it’s easy to lose steam before the final mile,” says Realtor.com’s Larissa Runkle.
She adds that once Thanksgiving has come and gone, many of us are already in full preparation mode for Christmas and New Year’s. So, if you’re looking for an easy way to make your home warm and inviting without changing up the decor every few weeks, Runkle offers a few genius ways to do festive decor looks that can be created affordably and at the absolute last minute. “Forget spending the big bucks on tablescapes and trinkets you’ll be sick of by Dec. 26,” she says.
“DIY tablescapes have gained popularity because they allow for a high level of personalization and creativity and can be more cost-effective than purchasing ready-made centerpieces,” says designer Guillaume Drew. “They offer the host a way to create a unique atmosphere that reflects their style or the event’s theme,” he says, pointing to Instagram and Pinterest for great examples. Consider staging your dining room with candles in various sizes — tapers, votives, and pillars create a dynamic, layered effect that feels inviting. And the best part is, this look is so accessible, and many of these candleholders can be sourced affordably from local shops or even repurposed from around the house.
Runkle also encourages you to use the sheer force of your baking prowess as a decor showstopper, citing @captivaecake to sample a cute dessert display. Showcase your special treats placing them front and center, with a mix of shapes and sizes to add visual interest.
Runkle says if your holiday hosting needs tend more toward preserving your home than decorating it, now might be a good time to invest in a washable under-the-table rug in stylish neutrals as in @houseliftdesign. Using washable rugs, especially in spaces used for entertaining, works well because it combines functionality with style, protecting floors from spills and wear while also adding a layer of texture, color, and pattern to a room.
If the point is to be elegant without being forcibly holiday-themed, use small decorative touches that speak of formality and special occasions, taking your dining space from the every day into the realms of hostess extraordinaire. Runkle likes a simple table runner design from @literallyrose that features a minimalist aesthetic, bringing a sense of sophistication and an uncluttered look that works well with various decor styles and for many different occasions.
