Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier once said, “The home should be the treasure chest of living." Home improvement projects don't have to mean knocking down walls or taking out a second mortgage, however. Some of the most impactful updates can be simple, affordable DIY jobs that breathe new life into your space.
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) wrote a blog post about this quoting Amber Shay, a design center expert for home builder Meritage Homes. ”Homeowners are looking for ways to refresh their homes without major renos. The good news is, there are plenty of budget-friendly upgrades that can make a big difference."
Shay shares her top tips for budget-friendly home improvement. First off, the kitchen and bathrooms may not be the most exciting spaces, but they're where you spend the most time. “Give these utilitarian areas a luxe upgrade by focusing on the details,” she says. “In the bathroom, incorporate vintage-inspired accents like plush rugs, framed artwork, and potted plants to create a relaxing, spa-like vibe. In the kitchen, ditch the plastic containers for stylish canisters and organize your pantry for maximum efficiency.”
The concept of incorporating natural elements into our living spaces has exploded in popularity and it's not hard to see why. Adding natural wood tones, houseplants, and other organic materials can instantly warm up a room. Greenery helps purify the air. Start small with a few potted plants or a live-edge side table, then build from there.
You may have heard it everywhere, but it remains as true today as it always has: A fresh coat of paint is the easiest, most affordable way to transform a room. “But don't limit yourself to the walls,” says Shay. "The ceiling is often the fifth forgotten wall.” Brush on a bold, unexpected hue to add instant visual interest.
How about adding some bling? Accessories are the jewelry of home design —finishing touches that pull a room together. “Incorporate pops of color through throw pillows, vases, and other decorative pieces,” Shay advises. “You can even frame your own artwork or photography for a personalized touch. Just be sure to arrange accessories thoughtfully, grouping similar items together for maximum impact.”
And lastly, window treatments are an easy way to add texture, color, and coziness to a space. “Hang some vibrant draperies or install Roman shades in a bold pattern. These simple updates can instantly warm up a room and make it feel more inviting.”
Shay ends by saying that the key to successful budget-friendly home improvement is to focus on the details. "Homeowners are becoming more intentional about their spaces, looking for ways to personalize and optimize every square foot," she explains. "It's not about the big, expensive projects - it's about making smart, strategic choices that reflect your unique style."
